Fence as Sculpture
The fence is a sculptural landscape element. It is molded to the contours of the land. The fence is not merely a barrier to keep unwanted visitors out. It is an artistic statement to form the skeletal structure that defines landscape space.
Japanese gardens often incorporate a pervasive pattern of a wall that borders the perimeter of the space. This walled garden contains a story or scene that identifies a sense of place or mystery.
